Are there any basic rules I should know about Nick Conti's acting classes?

BE ON TIME and stay for the ENTIRE class. Respect fellow actors by being attentive and quiet. Be fully prepared for class.

What acting manuals or books do you teach from?

Actors in all classes should read Respect for Acting by Uta Hagen, and Audition by Michael Shurtleff.

I've heard you spend a lot of time in your acting classes doing scene work and script analysis. How does this work?

The Beginning workshops work on fundamentals of script analysis, technique, and improvisational work and cold readings.

Both the Intermediate and Advanced workshops alternate weekly on prepared work.

This allows two weeks for preparation on the prepared work over a six-week period. (For this reason, you must commit to 2 months of acting classes.) You should have a minimum of THREE GOOD rehearsals within each two-week period.

Monologues should be no longer than 2 minutes, scenes no longer than 5 minutes.

Upon the first performance of the scene or monologue you should have rehearsed and done basic work on you selection but it does not need to be memorized.

Upon the second performance, your piece must be memorized and blocked and you should have props and costumes. Upon the third (final) performance, your scene or monologue should now be a finished product and a high quality performance.

After the third performance you will select a new monologue or scene and begin the cycle again.

What can you say about a director who can assess, evaluate and communicate the ultimate direction in the least amount of time and space...?

Meet this Director.

You as a Casting Director

On cold reading nights in all classes, you will be asked to give your opinion of each performance as if you were the casting director seeking an actor for a particular role.

You are asked to give an objective, honest opinion, rating each performance as follows:

Reject: This was a weak reading.

C-6: You see this actor has good skills but either is not ready to work on your project or is not appropriate for any of the roles in the current project for which you're casting. You'd like to bring this actor back again in 6 months.

Callback: This was a good quality performance. You definitely want to see this actor again in consideration for this role.

Hire: This was an incredible audition. You do not need to see anyone else.
